Terpsichore‘s Works” a company dedicated in supporting and promoting dance, is organizing International Dance Competitions every year giving the opportunity for the participants to receive scholarships in distinguished schools/faculties of dance in Europe, awards and gifts.

This year the event will take place at the town of Lemesos – Cyprus at Pattihio Theater

Information

The participant can compete in the following categories according given their age and their level. For every category in the semifinal and the final phase an obligatory choreography will be presented by all participants. The participant will receive the DVD and CD of the obligatory choreographies they wish to compete by filling and sending the corresponding application order form.

Classical Dance

B) Groups – Duets (pas des deux)
Girls from 14 years old with pointes and boys from 14 years old must present the obligatory choreography for the semifinal and a classical repertoire choreography for the final. For the classical repertoire choreography you must say the specific version you had chosen and this choreograph y must be presented without any changes.
C) Groups
The groups can have from 3 to 12 people that will dance a specific free choreography with pointes or demi-pointes. Groups categories are the presented in the following table. The time for each category is also given in this table.

The international dance competition is organized by “Terpsichore”, a company dedicated in supporting and promoting the art of dance and includes the following categories: classical dance (ballet), modern and jazz. 

Α. Classical Dance

In this category can compete individuals or group of students from dance schools of Greece or abroad, that will have supplemented,  up to the date of the competition,  at least the seventh (7th) year of age. Is allowed for participants of smaller ages to participate in higher categories, with the terms of the category they select to compete, while is prohibited the participation of higher age attendants in categories for smaller ages.  Also it is possible for duets to compete (pas des deux), given that both their members have reached, at least, the fourteenth (14th) year of age (Individuals that during the competition are 14 years old and 11 month are assumed that have completed the 14 year of age). A group can have from 3 to 12 people and the age of the group will be the mean value of the individuals’ age.

The choreographies on which the participants will compete are obligatory and will be send in DVD and all the related music on CD when the participants send the related order form (Ms Word, PDF), The DVD and the CD will be send directly after the arrival of the order form and cost 50€ including all obligatory choreographies (If a dance school presents 7 students in different categories and with different obligatory choreographies must order a single DVD and a single CD even if the competing categories include classical and/or modern and or jazz). The DVD and CD order and any postal charged that apply must be paid with cash on delivery.

ATTENTION: From this year on the DVD will not include obligatory dance classical choreographies for the categories for boys of Moyen, Superior and Excellence and the reason is that every year only a few people are participating. For this reason we only propose a certain musical part for each category included in the CD, (Moyen boys- track 6, Superior boys – track 9) and every teacher, participant and choreographer must create its own choreography for this music using the necessary skills and technical difficulties for each level as the ones described below, obligatory for each category:

Moyen Boys:

  1. Two pirouettes en dehors
  2. Two pirouettes en dedans
  3. One tour en l’ air
  4. One grand saut (i.e. grand jeté arabesque ή attitude, temps levé, sissonne etc.)
  5. Batterie (i.e. entrechat 4 ή 3 de volée, échappe battu, assemble sissonne, jeté brise etc.)

Superior Boys:

  1. Two pirouettes en dehors
  2. Two pirouettes en dedans
  3. Two tour en l’ air
  4. One grand saut (i.e. saut de basque, assemble en tournan, grand jeté battu en tournan, grand jeté ciseau, grand saut écart etc.)
  5. Batterie (all entrechat)

It is also possible girls from 14 years and more and boys from 14 and more to compete with choreographies from the classic repertory in the final phase of the competition if they select the category of Excellence. In the semifinal phase of the competition the participants in the category of Excellence must present the obligatory choreography for the Superior level. This applies the same for the duets, the choreographies presented must be from the classical repertory and the members of the duets must present in the semifinal the corresponding choreographies for the Superior level. ATTENTION! In the cases that any participant individual or in a group selects a choreography from the classical repertory, he/she should declare precisely the version of the selected choreography that will present (eg. Sylvia choreography G. Balanchine, publication American Ballet Theater), and he/she must not present part of different versions of the same choreography because he/she will be excluded from the competition.

 

ATTENTION: We created a new category named “Free Style Classic”.

The choreographies for this category are free to be selected for the semifinal and the final phase of the competition and can be of maximum length a) individual 1:30 minutes for the 1st and 2nd category, of 2 minutes for the 3rd and 4th category and for the group for the 1st and 2nd category of 3 minutes and the 3rd and 4rt category of 4 minutes. These choreographies should also include steps and sequences reflecting the category in which the participant will be competing without excluding any other steps.

In this category CLASSIC REPERTORY IS NOT ALLOWED

 

Β. Modern dance

In this category can compete individuals, or group of students from or abroad, that will have supplemented, up to the date of the competition,  at least the seventh (10th) year of age. Is allowed to participants of smaller ages to participate in higher categories, with the terms of the category they select to compete, while is prohibited the participation of higher age attendants in categories for smaller ages.  Also it is possible for duets to compete (pas des deux), given that both their members have reached, at least, the fourteenth (10th) year of age (Individuals that during the competition are 14years old and 11 month are assumed that have completed the 14 year of age). A group must have more than 3 people and the age of the group will be the mean value of the individuals’ age.

ATTENTION: The choreographies (same for all contestants) are obligatory

both for the semi final andthe final phase.

ATTENTION: We created a new category named “Free Style Modern”.

The choreographies for this category are free to be selected for the semifinal and the final phase of the competition and can be of maximum length for the individual of 1:30 minutes for the 1st and 2nd category, of 2 minutes for the 3rd and 4th category and for the group for the 1st and 2nd category of 3 minutes and the 3rd and 4rt category of 4 minutes. These choreographies should also include steps and sequences reflecting the category in which the participant will be competing without excluding any other steps, as described below:

α) 1st level (10 – 13 years old) Weight transfer and support axon transfer – elevation in demipoints – go through the floor – control at parallel and en dehors positions – curve of the back/contractions – kicks  – bounce – jerk – simple turn – jumps (in one and two legs) – simple movements in space (waking, running, chasses, triplet…) – complete control of direction and orientation in space – change of rhythm and energy.

  1. 2nd level (14 – 17 years old) Big body curves/contractions – lateral extensions/stretches – torsion – balance in axis and off axis – falls and revertion – support and floor transition – en dehors and en dedans turns (in one and two legs) – small and large jumps – changes of direction, potency and energy.
  2. For 3rd level (from 18 years old and higher) Turns in axis and off axis(both in one and two legs) – jumps with contractions, lateral extensions/stretches and spirals – support and floor transition – total control in space, time, potency and energy.

C. Jazz

 

In this category can compete individuals, or group of students from dance schools of Greece or abroad, that will have supplemented,  up to the date of the competition,  at least the seventh (8th) year of age. The choreographies for this category are free to be selected for the semifinal and the final phase of the competition and can be of maximum length for the individual of 1.5 minute for the 1st and 2nd category, of 2 minutes for the 3rd and 4th category and for the group for the 1st and 2nd category of 3 minutes and the 3rd and 4rt category of 4 minutes. These choreographies should also include steps and sequences reflecting the category in which the participant will be competing without excluding any other steps, as described below:

 

α) 1st level (8-10 years old) pas de bourree –  kick ball change – contretemps – change of directions -(pivot – pivot step) – simples isolations  – turns with legs in parallel position – translations (walking, running,  chasses, slides, jumps) – small jumps – balances – detournes

– piques without turn

  1. b) 2nd level (10-13 years old) pas de bourree – kick ball change – contretemps – change of directions -(pivot – pivot step) – simples isolations – turns with legs in parallel position – translations (walking, running,  chasses, slides, jumps) – small jumps – balances – detournes

– piques without turn

  1. 3rd level (14-17 years old) pas de bourree changing direction – contractions – en dehors et en dedans turns – developpes – changes in direction, potency and energy – hinge – balances

(on and off axis) – slides – triplets – deboules – piques with turn

  1. 4th level (18 years old and higher) off-axis balances – hinges – on and off axis turns – isolations (dauphin, snake) – turns on knees – developpes, tilt, lay out – jumps – long jumps – floor transitions – mess around – spiral – potency in space.

D. Free Style

This category named “Free Style” is not a common category for the competition. It is included only for the final phase of the competition. In this category all participants competing in modern and jazz can present a free choreography for the final phase and does note belong to any of the other categories (ie. neoclassic or even theatrical dance. The competitions committee is responsible for deciding the for the inclusion of these choreographies in this category. All participants of this category will receive grades, similar to all other categories, but will not receive any distinctions in this category. They will receive a commendation for their participation where their grade will be shown (this category is not a normal competing category).

 

ATTENTION!!!

 

  • You do not have any right to change the obligatory choreographies. The committee prior to each competing category will watch the corresponding video with the choreography and will exclude participants that will execute these choreographies even with minimal changes.
  • In categories from Mouen 2 and higher for the classical dance double pirouettes are obligatory where ever requested in the choreographies.
  • In cases that a choreography from the classic repertory, or a free choreography in the modern dance, will be presented every participant is compelled with his application of attendance to send a CD with the music on which he/she will dance in the competition suitably processed. If the choreography is a part of musical piece appropriate process must be made in order to make the final music suitable to much the choreography. This way any problem or losses will be avoided in the final phase of competition.
  • For the group choreographies you must take into account that the size of the theater’s stage will be 9×10 meter.
  • A group from a school can participate with different choreographies in different categories but one group cannot present more than one choreography in one category.
  • Extreme caution must is required for the age limits of each category for each participant, taken into account the exact date the dance competition takes place, so that each participant is only competing in categories he/she belongs.  Cases that younger participants are to compete in categories that the age limits are higher have also the right to compete in that category but they will be judged the same with all other participants in that category. Participation in a category that the participant’s age is higher than the age limits of this category is not allowed.
  • Imposing costume for participating in classic dance: a) For girls:  light color leotards, short transparent small skirt (optional) and light color tights.  b) For boys black tights and vest top (Tshirt).  c) For choreographies of repertory costumes are allowed.
  • During the dance competition entrance is not allowed to anybody. If requested analytical results for each participant will be given after the end of the competition.
  • During the dance competition photographs or video recording is not allowed. Photographs and video will be available to all outside the theater during the competition.
  • You must attach a small photograph on the top left corner of you application in the designated space.
  • Every participant must pay with postal cheque the amount of 40 € for every competition entry in every category. The cheque must be send to: Claire Gouvianaki – Patrigot, Mastraha 11, PO.BOX 71202,  Herakleion, Crete, GRECE”.  Each participant wishing to compete in more than one categories must fill in one application for each category he/she wishes to participate and pay with postal cheque, one for every participation entry (attached with the application form), the amount of 40€. For a person having more than one participation entries (in various categories) the total amount he/she must pay is 80€, whether in three categories the amount is 100€, in four categories the amount is 120€ and in five is 150€.

Grading system follows the scale of 0(lower)  to 20(higher) and is composed from the sum of two sub-grades. The sub-grading system is explained below:

            

Artistic Performance: 0-10 and Technique: 0-10

 

Note that the committee reserves the right to change the participation category to any participant dancer.

 

The evaluation includes the following awards:

 

           α. First Price, for grades ranging from 18 – 20

 

           β. Second Price, for grades ranging from 15 – 17,9

 

           γ. Third Price, for grades ranging from 12 – 14,9

 

           δ. Commendation, for grades ranging from 11 – 11,9

 

For the participation in the final phase of the competition the committee will decide with a YES or a NO.

 

Awards – Scholarships The awards and the scholarships refer to the higher categories of the competition of the classical, modern, and jazz. and will be public by February.

 

Expulsion from the contest this will happen when the terms of the competition are violated or  in case of inappropriate behavior.
